The Location
Venice, Italy. To be more precise, a small island called Lido, just off the coast.
At the prestigious Venice Film Festival where films from companies such as Disney
and other well known studios were shown along with the best of independent films.
Amongst them. Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children.
An unusual entry into the film festival, usually only completed works were shown.
But Square-Enix were invited to show a preview version of their upcoming CG movie.
The preview was to run for 25 minutes, containing both storyline and action footage
alike.
The Screening
Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children [Special Edition] was screened on September 4
at 8:00 PM. An encore screening [presumably for the press and other special guests]
was held on September 5 at 9am. The movie was screened in the Sala Perla theatre.
Unfortunately according to Italian website Final Fantasy Dimension who attended
the event, many "real" FFVII fans were unable to attend the screening due to poor
organization and preferential passes to the movie being given.
The Movie
How does one describe something like this without giving out any spoilers. Simple,
don't mention any details. So read on, if you have been wondering all about the
Venice screening, but you haven't wanted to spoil the movie for yourself.
The movie itself consisted of many action scenes, along with many storyline scenes.
During some stages, the movie flashed between sequences rather than concentrating
on one or another. This may have been an indication of where parts of the movie
were incomplete. Also at times the story jumped from one place to another, another
indication that this was an incomplete version of the film.
It's safe to say how the movie began. It began by showing a flashback of images
from Final Fantasy VII, intertwined with images of the present day Midgar. It was
intended to give people not only the story since the end of Final Fantasy VII, but
also to give a brief overview of events during FFVII to those who had not played
the game.
Familiar scenes that we have seen in both the trailers and the released images were
featured in the movie. Along with new scenes, these were expanded upon and bought
to life through the storyline.
Action scenes were fast paced and showed awesome animation. Fans would not be disappointed
in the amount of these that are included. Particularly since the failed Spirits
Within was extremely lacking in action scenes, something which many fans were unhappy
about.
The animation itself was done in true Square-Enix style and flowed well with the
movie.
The Press Conference
A press conference was held before the event at 2PM. This event was attended
by company president Youichi Wada, director Tetsuya Nomura, co-director Takeshi
Nozue, scenario director Kazushige Nojima and producer Shinji Hashimoto.
During the press conference, the following information was released:
- The release date has been changed to Spring 2005, it is currently unknown
as to whether this is the Japanese only release date or whether this will be
a world-wide release date.
- There is a team of only 40 people working on the film, as opposed to the
200+ people who worked on Spirits Within.
Press Coverage
The following are extact from a couple of gaming website articles showing their
overall view of Advent Children. You may have missed these, as they were included
right at the end of two very spoiler based articles that the sites wrote.
"As for us, Advent Children blew us away, even though we sort of knew what we were
in for when we saw a brief trailer at this past May's E3 in Los Angeles. The image
quality is top notch, and it's clear that Square's top creative minds (including
scenario writer, Kazushige Nojima, and art director, Yusuke Naora, along with Nomura
and Uematsu) are firing on all cylinders as evidenced by the movie's excellent pacing,
flair for the dramatic, and stylish execution. We'll be the first to admit this
is not an art film. The Japanese typically paint in broad, predictable strokes,
with Advent Children's palette of heroism painted in the same conflicted-hero-saves-the-world
hues of past games like Final Fantasy X, and other traditional RPGs. You needn't
read between any lines here, as what's put before you can basically be taken at
face value. But despite the transparency here, it works. When you see the final
product for yourself, we feel you'll find it hard to disagree. But what's more admirable
is that for all the stylish poses, for all the epic pronouncements and dire consequences,
it's clear that for this development team that fan service isn't enough. It's true
that they want to bring closure for fans of one of video gaming's most influential
titles, but it's also written on their sleeves that they want to make an excellent
movie. Considering what we've seen so far, we'd say they've got their feet planted
firmly in the right direction."

"It goes without saying that the CG film is well in line with Square Enix's extremely
high standards for cinematics--in fact, it appears to raise that bar a few notches.
The character models are highly detailed and animate smoothly while the environments
are slick, detailed areas that draw heavily on light and shadow. Certainly the upside
for fans are the amazing visuals that are gorgeous and detailed, and the story appears
to be an interesting one, as well."
